A New Type Partial Flow Dilution Tunnel with Geometrical Partitioning for Diesel Particulate Measurement

The authors have developed a new partial flow dilution tunnel (hereafter referred to as PPFT), whose principal device is a flux splitting gas divider, as a new means of measuring particulate emissions which can be applied to transient cycle testing of diesel engines. The advantage of this system is that it can achieve perfect constant velocity splitting by means of its structure, and theoretically can also maintain high splitting performance despite fluctuations in the exhaust flow rate, including those due to engine exhaust pulsation. We compared this system with a full tunnel by analyzing the basic performance of the system and measuring particulate matter (PM) using an actual vehicle engine.

A Study on Hybrid Control Method for Improvement of Fuel Economy and Exhaust-Gas Emission of Hybrid Trucks

Next-generation vehicles which include Electric Vehicles and Hybrid Electric Vehicles are studied and expected to reduce carbon dioxide emissions. The number of small delivery hybrid trucks has increased in the commercial vehicle class. The engine load of a commercial hybrid truck is reduced by using an electric motor. Fuel economy of the hybrid truck is improved with the assist. On the other hand, exhaust-gas temperature is decreased, and it has a negative effect on the purification performance of aftertreatment system. In this report, the fuel performance and emission gas characteristics of marketed small hybrid trucks were surveyed using the chassis dynamometer test system.

A Study on Modeling of Driver's Braking Action to Avoid Rear-End Collision with Time Delay Neural Network

Collision avoidance systems for rear-end collisions have been researched and developed. It is necessary to activate collision warnings and automatic braking systems with appropriate timing determined by a monitoring system of a driver's braking action. Although there are various systems to monitor driving behavior, this study aims to create a monitoring system using a driver model. This study was intended to construct a model of a driver's braking action with the Time Delay Neural Network (TDNN). An experimental scenario focuses on rear-end collisions on a highway, such as the driver of a host vehicle controlling the brake to avoid a collision into a leading vehicle in a stationary condition caused by a traffic jam. In order to examine the accuracy of the TDNN model, this study used four parameters: the number of learning, the number of neurons in the hidden layer, the sampling time with 0.01 second as a minimum value, and the number of the delay time.

A Two-Stroke Cycle Engine with Poppet Valves in the Cylinder Head - Part III: An Application of Gaseous Fuel Direct Injection System

Improvements in the engine performance, efficiency, scavenging, and emission characteristics of a modified two-stroke-cycle engine with the poppet valves and gaseous-fuel direct-injection system are described. In previous papers, SAE 901664 [1]* and 920180 [2], in which the scavenging characteristics were mainly investigated, the modified two-stroke-cycle engine was based on a production four-stroke-cycle engine. The base engine intake valve was used as scavenging valve, with a shroud installed for preventing the short-circuiting charge loss. As Shown in the previous results, considerable improvement of the scavenging efficiency was obtained. While a gasoline fuel carburetion system was used in the earlier engine [1], [2], the present engine used a propane gas direct-injection system, with the purposes of further decreasing fuel short-circuiting loss and also improving combustion preparation characteristics in terms of fuel atomization, vaporization and mixing with air.

Activation Timing in a Vehicle-to-Vehicle Communication System for Traffic Collision

Vehicle to vehicle communication system (V2V) can send and receive the vehicle information by wireless communication, and can use as a safety driving assist for driver. Currently, it is investigated to clarify an appropriate activation timing for collision information, caution and warning in Japan. This study focused on the activation timing of collision information (Provide objective information for safe driving to the driver) on V2V, and investigated an effective activation timing of collision information, and the relationship between the activation timing and the accuracy of the vehicle position. This experiment used Driving Simulator. The experimental scenario is four situations of (1) “Assistance for braking”, (2) “Assistance for accelerating”, (3) “Assistance for right turn” and (4) “Assistance for left turn” in blind intersection. The activation timing of collision information based on TTI (Time To Intersection) and TTC (Time To Collision).

Activation Timing of a Collision Avoidance System with V2V Communication

A vehicle-to-vehicle communication system (V2V) sends and receives vehicle information by wireless communication and assists safe driving. The present study investigated the activation timings of collision information support, collision caution support, and collision warning support provided by a V2V in an experiment using a driving simulator for four situations of (1) assistance in braking, (2) assistance in accelerating, (3) assistance in making a right turn, and (4) assistance in making a left turn at a blind intersection. The four situations are common scenarios of traffic accidents in Japan. Safety margins for collision information support and collision warning support were the time required for the driver to fully apply the brake pedal, while the safety margin for collision caution support was the time required for the driver to begin applying the brake pedal. The study investigated the effects of adding safety margins to standard activation timings.

Analysis of Behavior of Fuel Consumption and Exhaust Emissions under On-road Driving Conditions Using Real Car Simulation Bench (RC-S)

The investigation of vehicle performances under on-road conditions has been required for emission reduction and energy saving in the real world. In this study, Real Car Simulation Bench (RC-S) was developed as an instrument for actual vehicle bench tests under on-road driving conditions, which could not be performed by using conventional chassis dynamometer (CH-DY). The experimental results obtained by RC-S were compared with the on-road driving data on the same car as used in RC-S tests. As a result, it was confirmed that RC-S could accurately reproduce the behavior of fuel consumption and exhaust emissions under on-road driving conditions.

Application of Biodiesel Fuel to Modern Diesel Engine

The 1997 Kyoto protocol came into effect in February, 2005 to reduce greenhouse gases within the period 2008-2012 by at least 5 % with respect to 1990 levels. Application of biodiesel fuel (BDF) to diesel engine is very effective to reduce CO2 emission, because BDF is carbon neutral in principle. The purpose of this project is to produce a light-duty biodiesel truck which can be suitable for emission regulation in next generation. The effect of BDF on the performance and emissions of modern diesel engine which was equipped with the aftertreatment for PM and NOx emissions was investigated without modifications of engine components and parameters, as a first step for research and development of biodiesel engine. Rapeseed oil methyl ester (RME) was selected in behalf of BDF, and combustion characteristics, engine performance and exhaust emissions were made a comparison between RME and petroleum diesel fuel by steady operation and Japan transient mode (JE05) tests.

Association of Impact Velocity with Risks of Serious Injuries and Fatalities to Pedestrians in Commercial Truck-Pedestrian Accidents

This study aimed to clarify the relationship between truck-pedestrian crash impact velocity and the risks of serious injury and fatality to pedestrians. We used micro and macro truck-pedestrian accident data from the Japanese Institute for Traffic Accident Research and Data Analysis (ITARDA) database. We classified vehicle type into five categories: heavy-duty trucks (gross vehicle weight [GVW] ≥11 × 103 kg [11 tons (t)], medium-duty trucks (5 × 103 kg [5 t] ≤ GVW < 11 × 103 kg [11 t]), light-duty trucks (GVW <5 × 103 kg [5 t]), box vans, and sedans. The fatality risk was ≤5% for light-duty trucks, box vans, and sedans at impact velocities ≤ 30 km/h and for medium-duty trucks at impact velocities ≤20 km/h. The fatality risk was ≤10% for heavy-duty trucks at impact velocities ≤10 km/h. Thus, fatality risk appears strongly associated with vehicle class.

Combustion Characteristics and Performance Increase of an LPG-SI Engine with Liquid Fuel Injection System

Compared with petroleum fuel, liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) demonstrates advantages in low CO2 emission because of propane and butane, which are the main components of LPG, making H/C ratio higher. In addition, LPG is suitable for high efficient operation of a spark ignition (SI) engine due to its higher research octane number (RON). Because of these advantages, that is, diversity of energy source and reduction of CO2, in the past several years, LPG vehicles have widely used as the alternate to gasoline vehicles all over the world. Consequently, it is absolutely essential for the performance increase of LPG vehicles to comprehend the combustion characteristics of LPG and to obtain the guideline for engine design and calibration. In this study, an LPG-SI engine was built up by converting fuel supply system of an in-line 4-cylinder gasoline engine, which has 1997 cm3 displacement with MPI system, to LPG liquid fuel injection system [1].

Comparative Measurement of Nano-Particulates in Diesel Engine Exhaust Gas by Laser-Induced Incandescence (LII) and Scanning Mobility Particle Sizer (SMPS)

Particulate Matter (PM) from diesel engines is thought to be seriously hazardous for human health. Generally, it is said that the hazard depends on the total number and surface area of particles rather than total mass of PM. In the conventional gravimetric method, only the total mass of PM is measured. Therefore, it is very important to measure not only the mass of PM but also size and number density of particulates. Laser-Induced Incandescence (LII) is a useful diagnostic for transient measurement of soot particulate volume fraction and primary particle size. On the other hand, Scanning Mobility Particle Sizer (SMPS) is also used to measure the size distribution of soot aggregate particulates at a steady state condition. However, the measurement processes and the phenomena used to acquire the information on soot particulate are quite different between the LII and SMPS methods. Therefore, it is necessary to understand the detailed characteristics of both LII and SMPS.

Consideration on Appropriate Display Area for Head-Up Displays

Head-up displays (HUDs) require drivers to perceive double images simultaneously, that is, the scene to the front and display images, and this simultaneous viewing of two objects may cause cognitive confusion during driving. In this paper, we discuss some factors that determine the appropriate area for HUDs. First we discuss the feeling of troublesomeness with consideration of eye movements during driving. Secondly, we investigated the situation wherein the driver in a trailing vehicle perceives the stop lamps of a lead vehicle. Upon these considerations, we conclude that in the vertical direction the area under 4 degrees below the horizontal line would be a safer display area.

Construction of Driver Models for Cut-in of Other Vehicles in Car-Following Situations

The purpose of this study was to construct driver models using long short-term memory (LSTM) in car-following situations, where other vehicles change lanes and cut in front of the ego vehicle (EGV). The development of autonomous vehicle systems (AVSs) using personalized driver models based on the individual driving characteristics of drivers is expected to reduce their discomfort with vehicle control systems. The driving characteristics of human drivers must be considered in such AVSs. In this study, we experimentally measured data from the EGV and other vehicles using a driving simulator consisting of a six-axis motion device and turntable. The experimental scenario simulated a traffic congestion scenario on a straight section of a highway, where a cut-in vehicle (CIV) changed lanes from an adjacent lane and entered in between the EGV and preceding vehicle (PRV).

Construction of Driver Models for Overtaking Behavior Using LSTM

This study aimed to construct driver models for overtaking behavior using long short-term memory (LSTM). During the overtaking maneuver, an ego vehicle changes lanes to the overtaking lane while paying attention to both the preceding vehicle in the travel lane and the following vehicle in the overtaking lane and returns to the travel lane after overtaking the preceding vehicle in the travel lane. This scenario was segregated into four phases in this study: Car-Following, Lane-Change-1, Overtaking, and Lane-Change-2. In the Car-Following phase, the ego vehicle follows the preceding vehicle in the travel lane. Meanwhile, in the Lane-Change-1 phase, the ego vehicle changes from the travel lane to the overtaking lane. Overtaking is the phase in which the ego vehicle in the overtaking lane overtakes the preceding vehicle in the travel lane.

Construction of Personalized Driver Models Based on LSTM Using Driving Simulator

Many automated driving technologies have been developed and are continuing to be implemented for practical use. Among them a driver model is used in automated driving and driver assistance systems to control the longitudinal and lateral directions of the vehicles that reflect the characteristics of individual drivers. To this end, personalized driver models are constructed in this study using long short-term memory (LSTM). The driver models include individual driving characteristics and adapt system control to help minimize discomfort and nuisance to drivers. LSTM is used to construct the driver model, which includes time-series data processing. LSTM models have been used to investigate pedestrian behaviors and develop driver behavior models in previous studies. We measure the driving operation data of the driver using a driving simulator (DS).

Cycling Characteristics of Bicycles at an Intersection

Although traffic accidents in Japan involving bicycles have been decreasing yearly, more than 120,000 per year still occur. Few data exist regarding the mechanisms underlying bicycle accidents occurring at intersections. Such dangerous situations form the backdrop of the warning and automatic braking systems being developed for motor vehicles. By clarifying cyclist behavioral characteristics at crucial times, it may be possible to introduce a similar warning system for cyclists as a countermeasure to reduce accidents. The objective of this study is to clarify the mechanism of accidents involving bicycles and to obtain useful data for the development of a warning system for cyclists. A video camera and software investigated and analyzed cyclists' speed and trajectory at an intersection where many accidents occur. Cyclists entering the intersection from one direction were recorded.

Degradation of DeNOx Performance of a Urea-SCR System in In-Use Heavy-Duty Vehicles Complying with the New Long-Term Regulation in Japan and Estimation of its Mechanism

Degradation of the deNOx performance has been found in in-use heavy-duty vehicles with a urea-SCR system in Japan. The causes of the degradation were studied, and two major reasons are suggested here: HC poisoning and deactivation of pre-oxidation catalysts. Hydrocarbons that accumulated on the catalysts inhibited the catalysis. Although they were easily removed by a simple heat treatment, the treatment could only partially recover the original catalytic performance for the deNOx reaction. The unrecovered catalytic activity was found to result from the decrease in conversion of NO to NO2 on the pre-oxidation catalyst. The pre-oxidation catalyst was thus studied in detail by various techniques to reveal the causes of the degradation: Exhaust emission tests for in-use vehicles, effect of heat treatment on the urea-SCR systems, structural changes and chemical changes in active components during the deactivation were systematically investigated.

Detection of Deteriorated Catalyst on Vehicle under Actual Operation Conditions: Application of FFT Analysis to Signal Wave by the Dual Oxygen Sensors Method

The object of this study is to investigate an on-board diagnostic method to detect the deterioration of a three-way catalyst (TWC) under actual vehicle operating conditions, including the acceleration state. The signal data of two oxygen sensors were processed by the fast Fourier transformation (FFT) method. As a result, we found that the power spectrum of the signal waves can be the index of catalyst deterioration degree. Furthermore, it was confirmed that the difference between the power spectrum of the upstream oxygen sensor signal and one of the downstream oxygen sensor signal named ΔPower is effective index for detection of deteriorated catalyst under acceleration conditions.

Development of DME Engine for Heavy-duty Truck

In recent years, attention has focused on smokeless, sulfur-free dimethyl ethyl (DME) as a clean fuel for heavy-duty diesel vehicles [1]. In this development, the DME engine applied for 20-ton GVW truck was developed under the auspices of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport of Japan, the first known instance worldwide. With careful design of the fuel system considering DME's unique fuel characteristics and suitable combustion improvement, higher torque was obtained with DME, compared to diesel fueling. and also use of the proper EGR and catalyst, exhaust emissions levels were generally less than one-fourth of new long-term regulation value promulgated in 2005 Japan.

Effect of Biodiesel Blending on Emission Characteristics of Modern Diesel Engine

The use of biodiesel fuels as an alternative fuel for petroleum diesel fuel is very effective for the reduction of CO2 emission, because biodiesel is produced from renewable biomass resources. Biodiesel is usually blended to conventional diesel fuel in various proportions. It is possible that this biodiesel blending causes the problems on emission characteristics of modern diesel engine, because it could be confirmed that the application of neat biodiesel to modern diesel engines whose control parameters were optimized for conventional diesel fuel deteriorated the emission performances. It is necessary to clarify the effect of biodiesel blending on exhaust emissions of modern diesel engine. Rapeseed oil methyl ester (RME) was selected as a biodiesel used in this study.
