In order to take full advantage of SiC, a high temperature package for power module using SiC devices was designed, developed, fabricated and tested. The details of the material selection and fabrication process are described. High temperature reliability test and power test shows that the package presented in this paper can perform well at the high junction temperature.

Sundstrand is investigating 270-Vdc/hybrid 115-Vac electrical power generating and distribution systems technology so as to be well prepared to offer such systems for future aircraft applications. The approach taken has been to design, build, and test a representative system that meets or exceeds the tightest of the performance standards as defined by miliary standards. This paper describes a single-channel, 120-kW hybrid system and presents some typical performance data. The dc bus supplies a 30-kVA, 400-Hz, 115-Vac inverter; constant power load banks of up to 150 kW; and a resistive load bank of up to 90 kW. System simulation studies indicated the potential for unstable operation due to the negative impedance of the constant power load in conjunction with the source ripple filter and the load EMI filters. Unstable voltage and current were observed in system testing when the magnitude of the source impedance was not sufficiently below that of the load impedance.

Sundstrand has been investigating 270-Vdc/hybrid 115-Vac electrical power generating systems (EPGS) technology in preparation for meeting the electrical power generating system (EPGS) requirements for future aircraft (1). Systems such as the one being investigated are likely to be suitable for the More-Electric Aircraft (MEA) concepts presently under industry and military study. The present Sundstrand single-channel testbed is being further expanded to better understand the electrical system performance characteristics and power quality requirements of an MEA in which traditional mechanical subsystems are replaced by those of a “more-electric” nature. This paper presents the most recent Sundstrand 270-Vdc system transient performance data, and describes the modifications being made to the 270-Vdc/hybrid 115-Vac testbed.

Advanced technologies, such as 3D Image Metrology, offer great potential to lean manufacturing, if properly integrated into the production process. Over the last years 3D Image Metrology has developed a level of performance, which make it ideally suited for this purpose. These capabilities include the automatic in-process inspection of tools and parts before machining, machine control for highly accurate positioning during the machining operation, and in-process inspection during machining. This offers jig-less assembly, lower inventory, faster part throughput, and many more advantages.

This specification defines general architectural philosophy and specific design guidance for the proper installation and interface of various cabin equipment within the seats. Consistency with this specification allows each component installed on the seat to operate in concert when integrated with other relevant cabin type equipment. Standard electrical and mechanical interfaces of the In- Flight Entertainment System (IFES) equipment for the 3rd Generation Cabin Network (3GCN) associated with the seat are defined. This equipment consists of the headphone jacks (HPJ), passenger control unit (PCU)/multi function handset (including the cord), seat video display (SVD), remote data outlet (RDO), integrated seat box (ISB) which includes the seat power box (SPB)/seat data box (SDB), remote power outlet (RPO), and in-seat cables. Coated refractory metals, coated and alloyed graphites, hafnium-tantalum alloys, refractory borides, and stabilized zirconias are considered for the 3600–4000 F high-velocity air environment. Only refractory borides and stabilized zirconias are indicated as offering long duration and reuse capabilities for such high-temperature utilization. Iridium, as coatings on substrates of either graphites or refractory metals, appears attractive for shorter times (less than 1 hr). Environmental evaluation and the need for a theoretical framework to enable the prediction of performance data for such materials are indicated to be major problems facing users and suppliers.

Certain standard parts in the aerospace industry require qualification as a prerequisite to manufacturing, signifying that the manufacturer’s capacity to produce parts consistent with the performance specifications has been audited by a neutral third-party auditor, key customer, and/or group of customers. In at least some cases, a certifying authority provides manufacturers with certificates of qualification which they can then present to prospective customers, and/or lists qualified suppliers in a Qualified Parts List or Qualified Supplier List available from that qualification authority. If this list is in an infrequently updated and/or inconsistently styled format as might be found in a print or PDF document, potential customers wishing to integrate qualification information into their supplier tracking systems must use a potentially error-prone manual process that could lead to later reliance on out-of-date or even forged data.

Catalytic combustion coupled with activated carbon and molecular sieve adsorbents is applicable to all areas of air and gas clean up ranging from high to low levels of pollutants and trace contaminants control in a spacecraft environment is of no exception. In this study we propose a combined activated charcoal and catalytic combustion system based on a 70 watt power input achieving 350°C, operating on a 6 hour per 24 hour day catalytic cycle with an actual flow of 10.6 l min-1 in a residual free volume of 60 m3.

A Comparison of Electronic Heterodyne Moire Deflectometry and Electronic Heterodyne Holographic Interferometry for Flow Measurements

Electronic heterodyne moire deflectometry and electronic heterodyne holographic interferometry are compared as methods for the accurate measurement of refractive index and density change distributions of phase objects. Experimental results are presented to show that the two methods have comparable accuracy for measuring the first derivative of the interferometric fringe shift. The phase object for the measurements is a large crystal of KD*P, whose refractive index distribution can be changed accurately and repeatably for the comparison. Although the refractive index change causes only about one interferometric fringe shift over the entire crystal, the derivative shows considerable detail for the comparison. As electronic phase measurement methods, both methods are very accurate and are intrinsically compatible with computer controlled readout and data processing. Heterodyne moire is relatively inexpensive and has high variable sensitivity.

A Comparison of MAFIA / Microwave Studio Calculations with Experimental Results for Indirect Lightning Effects on Carbon Composite Structures

A study of indirect lightning effects on carbon composite structures with internal tubing is performed using the ‘ab initio’ Maxwell equation codes MAFIA and Microwave Studio (MWS). The modeling is performed both in the time and frequency domain by a finite difference method that can accommodate anisotropic media. Both time and frequency domains are used to better reflect the actual testing performed on aircraft. Solutions in frequency domain also help to overcome limitations of the time domain calculations. Time calculations cannot be performed for pulses longer than 100–200 μs due to the Courant condition and computer time limitations and hence, low frequency resonances of the system could be missed. Three dimensional frequency domain calculations are available with MAFIA and MWS, while time domain results are available in MAFIA, MWS and EMA3D.

A Comparison of Root Module Designs Relative to Wheat Growth and Development: Defining the Requirements for a Space Based Plant Culture System

Wheat plants were grown at water potentials in the root zone of -0.4, -3.0, and -5.0 kPa in root modules with various porous membranes through which the nutrient solution was delivered. Root modules contained plants grown during 49 days on different types of porous membranes: ceramic porous tubes with diameters of 10 mm or 22 mm, a porous titanium plate, in a compartment with a porous ceramic tube in perlite and in a 2.5 cm layer of perlite which covered a porous titanium plate. Root modules containing perlite showed much higher dry mass plants in yield than plants in root modules without perlite. A drop in water potential resulted in growth inhibition in all of the modules, especially in the tests without perlite. Design characteristics of the modules significantly affected the root distribution volume. These results may provide additional information in the design of root modules for future space plant growth chambers.

A Comparison of the Pulse and Swept-Frequency Transfer Function Lightning Test Responses on an Airplane with Composite Structure

Airplane level lightning testing is used to verify lightning protection effectiveness of airplane systems. Time domain pulse and frequency domain swept-frequency transfer function tests are two acceptable airplane level ground test methods available to the aircraft manufacturer. Although both methods offer an acceptable verification means, both methods pose their own technical challenges. The intent of this paper is to present data collected from lightning pulse and swept-frequency transfer function tests conducted on a 777 airplane, and to compare these tests results. The data collected for this comparison includes several pulse and transfer function measurements made on flight control wiring routed along the rear spar of the 777 graphite vertical and horizontal stabilizers. The pulse measurement involved injecting 20 kA damped sinusoid pulse into the tip of the stabilizer while measuring the induced voltage on an individual wire within select shielded flight control bundles.
