Vehicle Crash Reconstruction Principles and Technology

Crash reconstruction is a scientific process that utilizes principles of physics and empirical data to analyze the physical, electronic, video, audio, and testimonial evidence from a crash to determine how and why the crash occurred. This course will introduce this reconstruction process as it gets applied to various crash types - in-line and intersection collisions, pedestrian collisions, motorcycle crashes, rollover crashes, and heavy truck crashes. Methods of evidence documentation will be covered. Analysis methods will also be presented for electronic data from event data recorders and for video.

Probabilistically Extended Ontologies a basis for systematic testing of ML-based systems

Autonomous driving is a hot topic in the automotive domain, and there is an increasing need to prove its reliability. They use machine learning techniques, which are themselves stochastic techniques based on some kind of statistical inference. The occurrence of incorrect decisions is part of this approach and often not directly related to correctable errors. The quality of the systems is indicated by statistical key figures such as accuracy and precision. Numerous driving tests and simulations in simulators are extensively used to provide evidence. However, the basis of all descriptive statistics is a random selection from a probability space. The difficulty in testing or constructing the training and test data set is that this probability space is usually not well defined. To systematically address this shortcoming, ontologies have been and are being developed to capture the various concepts and properties of the operational design domain.

Design of a Decentralized Control Strategy for CACC Systems accounting for Uncertainties

Traditional CACC systems utilize inter-vehicle wireless communication to maintain minimal yet safe inter-vehicle distances, thereby improving traffic efficiency. However, introducing communication delays generates system uncertainties that jeopardize string stability, a crucial requirement for robust CACC performance. To address these issues, we introduce a decentralized Model Predictive Control (MPC) approach that incorporates Kalman Filters and state predictors to counteract the uncertainties posed by noise and communication delays. We validate our approach through MATLAB Simulink simulations, using stochastic and mathematical models to capture vehicular dynamics, Wi-Fi communication errors, and sensor noises. In addition, we explore the application of a Reinforcement Learning (RL)-based algorithm to compare its merits and limitations against our decentralized MPC controller, considering factors like feasibility and reliability.

Making modal analysis easy and more reliable – Reference points identification by experimental prestudy

Though modal analysis is a common tool to evaluate the dynamic properties of a structure, there are still many individual decisions to be made during the process which are often based on experience and make it difficult for occasional users to gain reliable and correct results. One of those experience-based choices is the correct number and placement of reference points. This decision is especially important, because it must be made right in the beginning of the process and a wrong choice is only noticeable in the very end of the process. Picking the wrong reference points could result in incomplete modal analysis outcomes, as it might make certain modes undetectable, compounded by the user's lack of awareness about these missing modes. In the paper an innovative approach will be presented to choose the minimal number of mandatory reference points and their placement.

Examination of Crash Injury Risk as a Function of Occupant Demographics

The objectives of this study were to provide insights on how injury risk is influenced by occupant demographics such as sex, age, and size; and to quantify differences within the context of commonly-occurring real-world crashes. The analyses were confined to either single-event collisions or collisions that were judged to be well-defined based on the absence of any significant secondary impacts. These analyses, including both logistic regression and descriptive statistics, were conducted using the Crash Investigation Sampling System for calendar years 2017 to 2021. In the case of occupant sex, the findings agree with those of many recent investigations that have attempted to quantify the circumstances in which females show elevated rates of injury relative to their male counterparts given the same level bodily insult. This study, like others, provides evidence of certain female-specific injuries.

Bayesian Network Model and Causal Analysis of Ship Collisions in Zhejiang Coastal Waters

Abstract For taking counter measures in advance to prevent accidental risks, it is of significance to explore the causes and evolutionary mechanism of ship collisions. This article collects 70 ship collision accidents in Zhejiang coastal waters, where 60 cases are used for modeling while 10 cases are used for verification (testing). By analyzing influencing factors (IFs) and causal chains of accidents, a Bayesian network (BN) model with 19 causal nodes and 1 consequential node is constructed. Parameters of the BN model, namely the conditional probability tables (CPTs), are determined by mathematical statistics methods and Bayesian formulas. Regarding each testing case, the BN model’s prediction on probability of occurrence is above 80% (approaching 100% indicates the certainty of occurrence), which verifies the availability of the model. Causal analysis based on the backward reasoning process shows that H (Human error) is the main IF resulting in ship collisions.

Simulative Assessments of Cyclic Queuing and Forwarding with Preemption in In-Vehicle Time-Sensitive Networking

The current automotive industry has a growing demand for real-time transmission to support reliable communication and for key technologies. The Time-Sensitive Networking (TSN) working group introduced standards for reliable communication in time-critical systems, including shaping mechanisms for bounded transmission latency. Among these shaping mechanisms, Cyclic Queuing and Forwarding (CQF) and frame preemption provide deterministic guarantees for frame transmission. However, despite some current studies on the performance analysis of CQF and frame preemption, they also need to consider the potential effects of their combined usage on frame transmission. Furthermore, there is a need for more research that addresses the impact of parameter configuration on frame transmission under different situations and shaping mechanisms, especially in the case of mechanism combination.

Developing an Automated Vehicle Research Platform by Integrating Autoware with the DataSpeed Drive-By-Wire System

Over the past decade, significant progress has been made in developing algorithms and improving hardware for automated driving. However, conducting research and deploying advanced algorithms on automated vehicles for testing and validation remains costly, especially for academia. This paper presents the efforts of our research team to integrate the newest version of the open-source Autoware software with the commercially available DataSpeed Drive-by-Wire (DBW) system, resulting in the creation of a versatile and robust automated vehicle research platform. Autoware, an open-source software stack based on the 2nd generation Robot Operating System (ROS2), has gained prominence in the automated vehicle research community for its comprehensive suite of perception, planning, and control modules. The DataSpeed DBW system directly communicates with the vehicle's CAN bus and provides precise vehicle control capabilities.
