A4A/SAE Nondestructive Testing (NDT) Innovation Award

Purpose: The A4A/SAE Nondestructive Testing (NDT) Innovation Award, formerly known as the Better Way Award, is an annual process established to recognize a government and/or industry team that has developed and applied a technology, technique, process, or policy that advances inspection or test of civil/commercial aircraft structure, aircraft components, or aircraft systems. Improvements will be assessed as a function of process sensitivity, reliability, and cost effectiveness.
 
Eligibility: Team eligibility includes both government and private industry personnel. Employees of universities, national labs, and non-profit organizations are also eligible as supplemental recipients of this award. Membership in A4A or SAE is not required. Teams may have two to twelve members. The accomplishment may involve research, development, engineering, application, management, or policy, and should have occurred not more than 18 months prior to the NDT Forum. Awards Committee members are not eligible for the award.
 
Awards Committee: An Awards Committee consisting of neutral subject matter experts representing A4A and SAE will review the nominations and select the winner.
 
Nominations: A4A and SAE are continuously soliciting nominations. Nominations may be submitted by anyone (including the awards committee members themselves). Ableson Award for Visionary Leadership

This award is the highest recognition that the SAE Foundation Trustees bestow upon an individual who has exhibited exemplary leadership that benefited SAE International, the SAE Foundation, and/or SAE Foundation Canada.

  • Recipient must have more than 20 years of service to the mobility community, representing industry, academia, or government and must have made notable contributions serving in a leadership capacity.
  • Recipient must have served as a SAE Foundation Trustee or on the SAE Foundation Canada Board of Directors for more than three years or be a leader who has made significant contributions toward improving math, science, engineering, or technology education.
  • Recipient must have led at least one initiative that resulted in noteworthy advancements of the SAE Foundation's mission.

The SAE Foundation encourages and increases student participation and achievement in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). It funds awards and scholarships as well as full continuum of K-16 STEM educational programs, including A World In Motion® and the Collegiate Design Series™.

Established in 2003, this award honors Donald W. Ableson, 1999 SAE President, who played a key role in establishing and building the SAE Foundation and the SAE Foundation Canada. He has made notable contributions to the advancement of the automotive industry and has given selflessly of his time and energy to SAE, the SAE Foundation, and the SAE Foundation Canada.

Award consists of a crystal memento presented at the SAE Foundation's Annual Celebration event.

Arch T. Colwell Cooperative Engineering Medal

Established in 1976, this award recognizes a unique and outstanding contribution over a period of time to the work of the technical committees under the SAE Executive Standards Committee in developing standards, specifications, technical reports, and data through cooperative research.

The medal was named in honor of Arch T. Colwell, its first recipient and 1941 SAE President. Dr. Colwell symbolized the dedication and devotion of SAE members who work to further the objectives of the SAE Executive Standards Program. The award is intended to stimulate technical committee members to greater accomplishments and the realization of satisfaction that comes from sharing their expertise.

Arch T. Colwell Merit Award

This award annually recognizes the authors of papers of outstanding technical or professional merit presented at a meeting of the Society or any of its sections during the calendar year. Papers are judged primarily for their value as new contributions to existing knowledge of mobility engineering.

Colwell, who funded this award, served SAE in many capacities for nearly 50 years, including a term as President in 1941. His own technical papers were outstanding examples of engineering excellence and clear writing.

Established in 1965, this award annually recognizes the authors of papers of outstanding technical or professional merit presented at a meeting of the Society or any of its sections during the calendar year. Papers are judged primarily for their value as new contributions to existing knowledge of mobility engineering.

Arnold W. Siegel International Transportation Safety Award

Established in 1987, this award recognizes individuals whose accomplishments include outstanding international research, innovation and contributions to crash injury protection, crash injury biomechanics and crash injury design for all mobility vehicles: land, air, sea and space. Nominees should be those persons in leadership positions who have made a significant transportation safety impact on their organizations or on society worldwide.

This award, was initially administered by the Stapp Advisory Committee. The award is funded through the generous support of Arnold W. Siegel, SAE Fellow and Medal of Honor recipient. Siegel's work was in Crash Injury Research conducted at UCLA. This pioneering research has contributed to modern crashworthy transportation vehicles and to the understanding of human tolerance in collisions.

Award for Research on Automotive Lubricants

This SAE International Paper Award recognizes contributions of original research and/or development to the better-mutual adaption of lubricants and lubricated automotive systems or components as written in SAE technical paper and/or journal article.

Barry D. McNutt Award for Excellence in Automotive Policy Analysis

Established in 2004, this award recognizes individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the development of improved federal automotive policy. Government policy is an increasingly important and complex influence on the ability of the mobility community to serve humanity. Through this award, SAE recognizes the importance of sound policy analysis and inspires members of the mobility community in government, industry and elsewhere to strive for excellence.

This award recognizes Barry D. McNutt for his contributions to rational and effective public policy and to encourage others to strive to advance the ability of government and industry to serve the public good. His contributions reflected his conviction that effective public policy must be firmly grounded not only in the reality of the problems to be solved but also in the economic and technical reality of the affected industry.

Charles M. Manly Memorial Medal

Established in 1928, this award annually recognizes the author(s) of the best paper(s) relating to theory or practice in the design or construction of, or research on, aerospace engines, their parts, components, or accessories at a meeting of the Society or its sections during the calendar year.

Manly served as SAE President in 1919 and following his death, many of his associates formed a committee to establish a memorial as a lasting tribute to his work in aeronautic engineering.

Clarence L. (Kelly) Johnson Aerospace Vehicle Design and Development Award

Established in 1992, this award recognizes individuals or a team who have distinguished themselves by making significant contributions during their career in the innovative design and development of advanced aircraft and/or spacecraft.

The SAE Board of Directors established the Clarence L. (Kelly) Johnson Aerospace Vehicle Design and Development Award to honor the memory of Clarence L. (Kelly) Johnson and the enormous impact he had on the aerospace industry. The SAE Aerospace Council administers this annual award to perpetuate recognition of Mr. Johnson's accomplishments and inspiration as the aeronautical genius who created Lockheed's famed Skunk Works and who played a leading role in the design and development of more than 40 of the world's most advanced aircraft.

This award is made possible through a fund established by the Lockheed Advanced Development Company.

Cliff Garrett Turbomachinery Engineering Award

Established in 1984, this award promotes engineering developments and the presentation of SAE papers on turbomachinery and/or developments that enable or advance the use of turbomachinery. The award honors Cliff Garrett and the inspiration he provided to engineers by his example, support, encouragement, and many contributions as an aerospace pioneer. To perpetuate recognition of Garrett's achievements and dedication as an aerospace pioneer, SAE administers an annual lecture by a distinguished authority in the engineering of turbomachinery and/or engineering related to creating, enabling, or advancing applications of turbomachinery in power systems, on-highway, off-highway, aircraft, and/or spacecraft uses.

Daniel Guggenheim Medal

Purpose:

The Daniel Guggenheim Medal was established as an international award for the purpose of honoring an individual who makes notable achievements in advancing the safety and practicality of aviation. The Medal recognizes contributions to aeronautical research and education, the development of commercial aircraft and equipment, and the application of aircraft to the economic and social activities of the nation.

This award is administered by the Guggenheim Medal Board of Award (jointly sponsored by and AIAA, ASME, SAE International and VFS).

Delco Electronics Intelligent Transportation Systems Award

Established in 1996, this award recognizes the profound impact that Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) will have on mobility in the 21st century. This award distinguishes an individual or team whose outstanding long-term accomplishments are judged to have significantly advanced the state-of-the-art of ITS through innovative technology achievements and/or significant industry leadership.

 

Elmer A. Sperry Award

The Elmer A. Sperry award commemorates the life and achievements of Elmer Ambrose Sperry, whose genius and perseverance contributed so much to so many types of transportation.

Forest R. McFarland Award

This award recognizes individuals for their outstanding contributions toward the work of the SAE Engineering Events in the planning, development, and dissemination of technical information through technical meetings, conferences, and professional development programs at SAE events or outstanding contributions to event operations in facilitating or enhancing the interchanges of technical information.  Special consideration is given to the contributions made within the past 12 months from the time of nomination.

Established in 1979, this award is administered by SAE Engineering Events and honors the late Forest R. McFarland who was himself an outstanding session organizer, a chairman of the Passenger Car Activity and a member of the Engineering Meetings Board. Funding for this award is through a bequest by McFarland to SAE and consists of a framed certificate presented at an appropriate event.

Franklin W. Kolk Air Transportation Progress Award

Established in 1978, this award recognizes an individual or a team for unique and outstanding contributions to air transportation and/or to the work of the aerospace technical committees in developing aerospace standards, specifications, technical reports, and data through cooperative research.

SAE established the Franklin W. Kolk Air Transportation Progress Award to acknowledge and commemorate the distinctive contributions of the late Franklin W. Kolk to the advancement of civil air transportation and to the associated work of the Society. Kolk was renowned for the many significant contributions he made in the design of commercial transport aircraft. He was an active participant in many government/industry committees and was the founding chairman of the SAE A-21 Committee on Aircraft Noise Measurement.

The criteria for the selection shall include the following:

  • The significance of the individual's/team's contribution in terms of the originality of the work.
  • The impact and influence of the contribution on the progress and development of air transportation.
  • The value of the contribution to the aerospace industry, the government and the general public.
  • Recognition by the individual's/team's peers in SAE for both leadership and participation in bringing to realization the important objectives of the Aerospace Council.

This award, established in 1978, is administered by the Kolk Award Selection Committee.  

Franz F. Pischinger Powertrain Innovation Award

Established in 2008, this award recognizes exceptional innovation and competence in powertrain design and development through the annual recognition of an engineer who has demonstrated outstanding innovation in the field. The powertrain remains the "heart" of the transportation industry. It is the singular most expensive and most complex part of every vehicle. SAE, more than any other organization, has been integral in supporting automotive engineers in their endeavors to improve transportation powertrains. This award is a logical extension of SAE's core activities.

The nominee must be an engineer (employed or retired) whose professional career focuses on powertrain technology in a leadership role, and demonstrates innovation through patents, publications, and/or new products or processes. The award will recognize technical innovation and overall impact on the advancement of powertrain technology over the nominee's career. In addition, contributions made by the nominee to advance SAE's goal to further global mobility technology will be considered.

Members of the Franz F. Pischinger Powertrain Innovation Award Selection Committee are not eligible for this award while serving on the committee.

The award consists of a bronze plaque and a $2500 honorarium that will be presented at the North American International Powertrain Conference (NAIPC) beginning in 2017.

Gordon Millar Award

The Millar award recognizes an individual or organization that best demonstrates continuous philanthropic support of the SAE Foundation's mission to encourage and increase student participation and achievement in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. The award is funded by AVL.

Gordon Millar was an SAE Fellow and a member of SAE International since 1949. He was elected to the National Academy of Engineering in 1975 and, in 1984 served as SAE President, the same year that he concluded a noteworthy career at John Deere. He was a noted author and a consultant to the Southwest Research Institute, as well as a recognized expert in the history and restoration of classic marine engines. He was a lifetime advocate for improving STEM education and encouraging women to seek engineering careers.

Harry L. Horning Memorial Award

Established in 1938, this award annually recognizes the author(s) of the best paper on the subject of the better mutual adaptation of fuels and internal combustion engines.  The award preserves the memory of the dedication of SAE's 1925 President, Harry L. Horning, to the pursuit of improved mutual adaptability of engines and fuels and serves as a motivation for others to follow in his footsteps.

Henry Ford II Distinguished Award for Excellence in Automotive Engineering

The Ford Motor Company funded this award in 1988 in honor of Henry Ford II’s enormous impact on the mobility industry. 

The award recognizes the ingenuity of SAE member individuals or teams, whose engineering skills have contributed to the design of a product or development of a manufacturing process which has had a significantly positive impact on the passenger car, truck, or bus industry.

Providing supervisory or managerial engineering direction alone does not fulfil the award requirement. 

International Leadership Citation

This citation was created to provide public recognition to an individual well known internationally for continuous professional involvement and participation in SAE's meetings, conferences, congresses and/or unique assistance and support in helping SAE achieve its goals and objectives, either in the broadest sense or related to one specific conference abroad.

This citation, established in 1988, is administered by the Sustainable Development Program Committee.

J. Cordell Breed Award for Women Leaders

Established in 1999 by the SAE Women Engineers Committee, and previously named WEC/BREED Award for Women's Leadership, the J. Cordell Breed Award for Women Leaders is designed to recognize women active in all sectors of the mobility industry who have achieved the best balance of life both professionally and personally.  The recipients shall be selected based primarily on outstanding performance or significant contributions in two or more of the following areas:

  •   Exhibits outstanding service to her company and community.
  •   Demonstrates excellent leadership as a supervisor, manager, or in team environments.
  •   Displays innovation and uniqueness in achieving corporate and personal goals.
  •   Displays excellence in creatively dealing with the challenges professional women are faced with
  •   Provides important engineering or technical contributions to the mobility industry.
  •   Overcomes adversity.
  •   Participates in and is involved with SAE activities.

James M. Crawford Executive Standards Committee Outstanding Achievement Award

This award recognizes those who make a valuable contribution of time and leadership in support of the SAE technical committees through external representation of the Society and/or contributions to SAE technical committee work in the form of research, test methods and procedures, and/or development of standards.  Special consideration is given to contributions made over the past 12 months prior to nomination.

The James M. Crawford Fund was established in 1953. This award honors James M. Crawford, who was SAE International President in 1945. Prior to 2013, the name of the award was the Technical Standards Board Outstanding Achievement Award. In 2018, the name of the award was changed to the James M. Crawford Executive Standards Committee Outstanding Achievement Award.

L. Ray Buckendale Lecture

Established in 1953, this award provides for an annual lecture that deals with ground vehicles for either on- or off-road operation in either commercial or military service. The intent is to provide procedures and data useful in formulating solutions in commercial vehicle design, manufacture, operation, and maintenance.

L. Ray Buckendale, 1946 SAE President, by his character and work, endeared himself to all who were associated with him. Foremost among his many interests was the desire to develop the potential abilities in young people. To this end, the lecture is directed primarily to the needs of young engineers and students with emphasis on practical aspects of the topic.

Lloyd L. Withrow Distinguished Speaker Award

Established in 1984, the award recognizes individuals who have demonstrated outstanding presentation skills. The intent of the award is to maintain a high level of presentations at SAE technical sessions by recognizing individuals who make outstanding presentations at those sessions. The recipient must have received the Oral Presentation Award more than twice to receive this award.

Originally established in 1984 as the SAE Distinguished Speaker Award by the Engineering Meetings Board, the award name was changed to the SAE Lloyd L. Withrow Distinguished Speaker Award in 1993 to honor the late Lloyd L. Withrow.

As Department Head of the GM Research Laboratories Fuels and Lubricants Department, Withrow mentored many engineers and contributed significantly to the fields of fuels and lubricants for automotive vehicles. His research on engine combustion from 1926 -1948 was a watershed that is still referenced and utilized. Both engineers and society in general have benefitted greatly over the years from his activities and his personality. Withrow died on December 9, 1992, only five days before his 93rd birthday.

Withrow was an SAE Fellow and noted speaker at many SAE meetings. Through a request from several prominent SAE members, this award name was changed to recognize him for his outstanding communication skills and his continual insistence that those he supervised also develop and demonstrate excellent communication skills, both written and oral.

The award consists of a framed certificate that is presented at the Awards Ceremony during the WCX World Congress Experience.

Marvin Whitlock Award

Established in 1988, this award annually recognizes an individual or team for significant technical contributions and/or innovation related to operational availability of aircraft. Operational availability includes areas such as repair design, tooling, maintenance practices, logistics, inspection, modification and safety.

The award acknowledges and commemorates the distinctive management contributions of the late Marvin Whitlock, Senior Vice President-Maintenance and a member of the Board of Directors of United Air Lines.

Max Bentele Award for Engine Technology Innovation

Established in 2001, this award annually recognizes an SAE member whose work has furthered innovation in the manufacture, design and improvement of engine technology for ground, air or space vehicles. The award honors Max Bentele for his contributions to the field of mobility engines and his encouragement for others to innovate and promote advances in the area. The award is designated for engineers who have at most been out of school for ten years, who have made a major contribution through a new idea, concept, innovation or application which provides a recognized improvement in engine technology and which has been verified through proof of concept demonstrations. It is intended to recognize the global nature of the SAE and the breadth of the mobility community that it serves.

The award is made possible by a contribution from the Max Bentele Foundation.

Ralph H. Isbrandt Automotive Safety Engineering Award

Established in 1972, this award annually recognizes the author(s) of the most outstanding SAE technical paper or journal article on the subject of automotive safety engineering.  During his 45-year automotive career, Isbrandt, SAE's 1967 President, provided a constant inspiration to young engineers seeking and following a mobility engineering career. The award is funded from an endowment comprising donations from American Motors Corp., Chrysler Corp., Ford Motor Co., General Motors Corp., the 2nd International Passive Restraint Systems Conference Banquet Committee, and Isbrandt's many friends.

Rodica Baranescu Award for Technical & Leadership Excellence

Established in 2011, this award celebrates the successes of women in the engineering profession and recognizes their leadership and technical contributions in the aerospace, automotive and commercial vehicle sectors. The award serves to broaden the awareness of the reach and impact of women working in mobility engineering. Its goals are to stimulate the involvement of women in engineering as well as open doors for young girls interested in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) who wish to pursue engineering careers.

The award is enabled by a gift from Rodica Baranescu, Ph.D. Baranescu is an SAE Fellow, Past President of SAE International, and a member of the National Academy of Engineering. She is a mechanical engineer who started her professional and academic career in her native country, Romania, before immigrating to the United States in 1980. In 2000, she was the first woman elected President of SAE International.

Nominees for this award must be women who have demonstrated technical competency and leadership in engineering. Beginning in 2017, three women will be honored each year - one from each mobility engineering sector (aerospace, automotive and commercial vehicle). Awardees may be employed or retired and they must be members of SAE International.

Russell S. Springer Award

Established in 1954, this award recognizes the author of an original and outstanding technical paper that is published in SAE literature in the year for which the recipient is selected.  The technical paper shall demonstrate and be judged on originality, outstanding content and contribution to the industry.  To encourage younger member achievement, the recipient must be an SAE member who is 36 years of age or younger at the time of the presentation.

The award honors the late Russell S. Springer who funded this award through his bequest.

 

SAE Aerospace Engineering Leadership Award

Established in 1992, this award honors an individual at the corporate official level for outstanding contributions to the field of aerospace engineering through his/her leadership skills. It recognizes an individual who has applied their leadership skills in aerospace engineering to make contributions leading to great positive impact on the aerospace community. Recognition may be for a singular accomplishment or lifetime achievement.

The award consists of an original design of aluminum and marble presented each year at a major SAE aerospace meeting.

SAE Arnold W. Siegel Humanitarian Award

Established in 2014, and made possible by a generous gift from Arnold and Stephanie Siegel, this award proudly represents members and non-members of the Society whose mobility industry contributions have made a lasting social benefit on humanity. The award will honor individuals, teams, organizations or entities, both domestic and internationally, whose mobility industry contributions - research or practical application - have made a significant, positive, multi-generational impact on the world such as, but not limited to: mobility safety or the environment, creating a safer, healthier world.

The SAE Arnold W. Siegel Humanitarian Award honors Arnold W. Siegel, an SAE Fellow and Medal of Honor recipient, whose pioneering crash injury research began in 1954 at the University of California-Los Angeles. His extensive accomplishments in transportation safety and research include working with the world's first experimental full-scale automotive crash program, designing and constructing early versions of anthropometric dummies, and more than 40 years of collision and injury analysis and consulting for research and forensic purposes. He helped pioneer research on barrier, side-impact, rollover head-on, motorcycle and pedestrian crashes. He built the first infant and child dummies, crash tested them and worked on and designed the first rear facing infant safety seats and child booster seats resulting in significantly fewer injuries and deaths in auto accidents. In collaboration with others, he worked to reveal critical automotive safety issues and create life-saving solutions, bringing injury prevention to the forefront, forever altering the way automobiles are engineered.

SAE Emeritus Recognition

Established in 2014, the impetus for the SAE Emeritus recognition was a desire by the SAE Membership Board to honor those distinguished, retired SAE members who have helped make our organization the place for engineers to learn, grow, and collaborate across industries through their continued support and volunteer engagement. Members chosen for this recognition include recipients of the SAE Medal of Honor, SAE Fellows, and former SAE Presidents, Officers, Directors and Chairs of SAE Operating Boards and Board Committees.

All recipients of the Emeritus Recognition receive a plaque, which is presented at the Award & Recognition Ceremony during the WCX World Congress Experience or at another appropriate venue and free registration to all of SAE International’s three major congresses: WCX, AeroTech Congress & Exhibition, and COMVEC™.

SAE Engineering Events Outstanding Oral Presentation Award

The oral presentation award program is intended to maintain a high level of presentations at SAE technical sessions by recognizing individuals who make outstanding presentations at those sessions.

This award, established in 1972, is administered by Engineering Events. Evaluations are made by members of the audience for each technical presentation. the award consists of a certificate and is presented at an Activity meeting or other appropriate event.

SAE Fellow Grade of Membership

The highest grade of membership, this recognizes and honors long-term members who have made a significant impact on society's mobility technology through leadership, research, and innovation.

Established in 1975, the grade of Fellow is administered by the SAE Fellow Committee. Election to Fellow is an exceptional professional distinction bestowed on around 20 recipients each year. A distinctive Fellow pin is presented to the new Fellow at the annual Fellow dinner and a framed Fellow certificate is presented during the SAE Awards Ceremony. Both functions are held at the WCX World Congress Experience.

SAE Foundation Industry Leadership Award

The Industry Leadership Award recognizes individuals who have made meaningful contributions to the mobility industry. Nominees must have achieved the following:

  • A significant level of success in their STEM careers.
  • Demonstrated innovation and risk taking.
  • Established a new direction or developed a position which challenged their industry.
  • Made contributions outside of their industry, exemplified through community education, philanthropic or government activities.

SAE Foundation Young Industry Leadership Award

Awarded to promote careers in the engineering community by recognizing men and women who have significant accomplishments and who show potential for significant leadership growth in industry. Nominees must have less than 12 years of industry experience. These individuals must have:

  • Proven accomplishments in their career;
  • Shown promise and possess leadership ability;
  • Received recognition from their employer or organization; and
  • Demonstrated commitment to the community, professional societies and/or STEM Education (science, technology engineering and math)

SAE IHI Achievement in Boosting Award

This award honors the best innovation and/or implementation of new ideas in boosting systems by an individual or a team that have positively impacted the industry.  New ideas not just in the area of performance, but also in the areas of fuel economy, emissions, cost, quality and reliability that generate a positive impact within the automotive industry will be considered.

SAE International Award for Aerospace Innovation

Purpose:

This award recognizes individuals or teams who have demonstrated outstanding innovation in aerospace engineering, making significant contributions during their career in the innovative design and development of advanced aircraft or spacecraft and resulting in industry- or life-changing impact.

This award was made possible by generous donations from R. Dixon Speas, PRC Aviation and Lockheed Martin.

Criteria:

  • Nominees’ achievements must represent unique and original engineering applications or innovations that have had a demonstrable positive impact on aerospace.
  • Nominees should have a distinguished career in aerospace with proven accomplishments in the innovative design, or operational availability (repair design, tooling, maintenance practices, logistics, inspection, modification, and safety) of aircraft or spacecraft.
  • Individuals and teams may be nominated for this award; multiple award winners are possible.

SAE International Award for Automotive Innovation honoring Edward N. Cole

Purpose:

Established in 1978, this award honors the memory of Edward N. Cole, former President and Chief Operating Officer of General Motors, and the inspiration he provided others in the engineering profession by his continuing search and drive for product innovation.

Criteria:

  • Significant innovative achievement in automotive engineering or whose innovative design is well detailed in an SAE paper.
  • Original innovative contribution, not building upon the application of some development or invention already known.

SAE International Award for Commercial Vehicle Innovation honoring Magnus Hendrickson

Purpose:

This award honors renowned inventor and businessman Magnus Hendrickson, who founded Hendrickson Motor Truck Company in 1913, by recognizing individuals or teams (SAE members or non-members) whose efforts in commercial vehicle dynamics represent true innovation and have created significant, lasting change in the commercial vehicle industry.

This award was made possible by a generous gift from Hendrickson.

Criteria:

The ideal award recipient(s) is an individual or team (SAE member or non-member) whose research and/or practical application represents unique, original concepts that when applied to vehicle dynamics, cause significant, positive change and elevate vehicle dynamics to new levels of innovation.

  • “Commercial Vehicle” is defined as a Class 1 through 8 on-highway or on/off–highway truck, tractor-trailer, or bus whose primary purpose is to transport goods or people and excludes any such vehicles intended solely for use in military, farming, or construction applications.
  • “Vehicle Dynamics” is defined as the ride, handling, stability, or load carrying ability of a truck, tractor-trailer, or bus, and excludes the aerodynamics of any such vehicles.
  • The award (i) shall be given for an actual component, subsystem, or system that is physically incorporated into a Commercial Vehicle and enhances Vehicle Dynamics, and (ii) shall exclude a study, procedure, or process that predicts or analyzes Vehicle Dynamics. Nominees must have earned at least one U.S. Patent that represents an original concept or design and qualifies as a significant engineering achievement in vehicle dynamics for the commercial vehicle industry. Further, any such components, subsystem, or systems need not be patented, but must have been offered for sale for at least one year.
  • Previous engineering achievements and innovation will be considered when determining nominees' eligibility for this award.

SAE International Award for Computational Fluid Dynamics Honoring Ramesh Agarwal

Purpose:

This Award recognizes professionals (individuals or teams) who have made significant science and engineering contributions to computational fluid dynamics (CFD).  

The award was made possible through a generous contribution from the Agarwal Family, in honor of Ramesh Agarwal, the William Palm Professor of Engineering at Washington University in St. Louis. Professor Agarwal is a leader in sustainable aviation, computational fluid dynamics, and renewable & clean energy technologies, and is a Fellow and longtime member of SAE International.

Criteria:

  • Professionals (individual or team) who have made significant science and engineering contributions to the field of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) are honored through this award.  
  • Nominees may be from industry, academia, or government who have made contributions to CFD and its applications within the aerospace or ground vehicle industries.  
  • Nominees will be assessed based upon their development of CFD methods/technology, their significant contributions such as new methods, new or enhanced software, or simulation processes and their positive impact in the Industry or Engineering Community. 10-years of demonstrated professional contributions to CFD and its applications preferred but not required (this does not include graduate school studies)

SAE International Award for Emerging Leadership in Mobility

Purpose:

To recognize mobility professionals who have demonstrated outstanding technical innovation and leadership early in their careers.

This award was made possible by generous gifts from Russell S. Springer, the Max Bentele Foundation and AEM.

Criteria:

  • Engineer working in the mobility industry with less than 10 years industry experience.
  • Demonstrated innovation that has resulted in improvement in a mobility industry technology.
  • Demonstrated leadership and encouragement of others to innovate and promote advances in mobility.

SAE International Award for Influential Executive in Automotive Honoring Henry Ford II

Purpose:

This award recognizes individuals for their executive leadership in Automotive Engineering. Nominees may be executives who have served the automotive industry for a large portion of their career and can demonstrate significant contributions to the progress and development of ground transportation, creating value for their company, automotive industry, and/or society.

Providing supervisory or managerial engineering direction alone does not fulfill the award requirement.

The Ford Motor Company funded this award in 1988 to honor Henry Ford II’s pioneering impact on the mobility industry.

Criteria:

  • Vice President or C-suite Executive for a minimum of five years.
  • Led at least two major corporate or industry initiatives.
  • Demonstrated success developing collaborative teams.
  • Fostered a customer-focused environment.

SAE International Award for Motorsport Safety Honoring John Melvin

Purpose:

NASCAR funded this award to recognize individuals, organizations, or teams whose research and/or practical application represents unique, original concepts that, when applied to motorsports, cause significant positive change and elevate safety to new levels of innovation. Nominees should be those who have demonstrated a commitment to reducing the injuries in auto racing incidents.

Dr. John Melvin was a pioneer in the field of driver safety, particularly in the area of driver restraint systems. He persuaded drivers to adopt the HANS (head and neck restraint) device, was a staunch supporter of “SAFER” (steel foam and energy reduction) barriers on the track and was a key developer of "black box" data recording for racecars that helped sanctioning bodies learn from accidents. His many contributions as a safety consultant to NASCAR for more than 13 years forever changed the sport.

Criteria:

  • Selection will be based on the significance and impact of the cited contribution and the lasting safety benefit to Motorsport. 
  • Demonstrated notable achievements, outstanding research, and innovation within the Motorsport industry.
  • The cited contributions may be measured by a combination of publications (technical articles, research papers, etc.), patents, honors, and awards. Nominees are not limited to SAE members nor are records of achievements limited to only within SAE.
  • The completed nomination form must be accompanied by at least two letters of support verifying the accomplishments cited in the nomination. Names and email addresses of references are not accepted in lieu of letters.

Purpose:

Purpose:

This award recognizes individuals or teams whose research has resulted in new applications or innovations that have advanced fuels and lubricants within the mobility industry.

Criteria:

  • Nominees’ research must represent unique and original research resulting in new applications, engineering methodologies or technological innovations that have had a demonstrable positive impact on lubricants and lubricated systems or components.
  • The research must have resulted in extraordinary advancement within the mobility industry, resulting in increased efficiency, accessibility, safety, sustainability or usefulness of a product, system, or process.
  • The unique and original research must be less than five years old, and these innovations must be in use today.

SAE International Award for Outstanding Student Leadership in STEM Honoring Max Rumbaugh

Purpose:

This award recognizes an outstanding student leader of one or more SAE activities and, through the award, encourages a vision within the student to become an SAE leader during their adult career.

Past SAE Executive Vice President Max E. Rumbaugh Jr. established this award with a generous gift in 2002 to realize his vision of encouraging and inspiring young SAE members to become engaged with SAE throughout their professional careers/lifetimes.

Criteria:

SAE student members will be nominated by their SAE faculty advisor who will provide a citation detailing the student's outstanding leadership skills during the past academic year. All nominees will meet the following criteria:

  • SAE Student Member who is about to graduate or has already graduated from a university or college in a technical field related to automotive engineering (This includes undergraduates and graduates)
  • The student will have demonstrated outstanding leadership skills in one or more SAE activities during the academic year being concluded during the year of nomination.  (The purpose of this provision is to preclude an individual from being selected for leadership demonstrated solely in years prior to the year of his/her selection.)  One recipient will be selected.
  • It is preferred that the recipient has begun employment when selected (or will soon begin their employment following a pending graduation).
  • Nominations will be judged based on SAE-related leadership activities during the year of nomination, and imminent support of SAE and its activities.

SAE International Award for Propulsion Innovation Honoring Franz Pischinger

Purpose:

This award recognizes engineers who have held leadership positions focused on propulsion technology and can demonstrate innovation through patents, publications, and/or new products or processes.

FEV provided the funding for this award to honor professor Franz F. Pischinger, who devoted his career to furthering powertrain technology and the education of young engineers. He held leading positions in the powertrain industry for most of his 50-year career, founded FEV in 1978 and served as the company’s president and CEO until 2003.

Criteria:

  • Technical innovation and overall impact on the advancement of powertrain technology over the nominee's career.
  • Contributions to advance SAE's goal to further global mobility technology will be considered.

SAE International Award for Quality Leadership Honoring Subir Chowdhury

Purpose:

This award recognizes those in the mobility industry who bring forth innovation and broaden the impact of quality in mobility engineering, design, and manufacturing. It brings an awareness to the beneficial impact provided to society-at-large that has been attained by mobility engineering through the use and power of quality in engineering.

The award was established in 2010 through a generous gift from Subir and Malini Chowdhury. Subir Chowdhury is one of the world’s leading management consultants. He has helped Fortune 500 companies save billions of dollars with improvements to their quality and performance. He has authored more than 15 books (many international bestsellers) and given dozens of talks on management and quality.

 Criteria:

  • Leaders in academia or industry, who have contributed substantial skills and talent to advance and promote the principles and application of quality in Mobility Engineering.
  • Served in a leadership role for a minimum of five years.
  • Demonstrated success in leading at least one major quality initiative with proven impact on a product, process, and/or service.

SAE International Award for STEM Education Excellence Honoring Lloyd Reuss

Purpose:

This Award recognizes elementary school teachers that develop students’ understanding of math and science through the use of SAE’s A World In Motion® (AWIM ®) curriculum.

The award honors the work and dedication of Lloyd Reuss, former President of General Motors Corp. and Chair of the SAE VISION 2000 Executive Committee. Reuss was a steadfast supporter of SAE’s AWIM program.

Criteria:

  • Demonstrated, through qualitative and quantitative data, exemplary use of the AWIM curriculum.
  • Nominees (individuals or teams) must be elementary teachers (K-6) from public, parochial, or private schools.

SAE International Award for Safety in Transportation Honoring Arnold W. Siegel

Purpose:

This award recognizes individuals or teams whose work has created a demonstrable impact on safety in transportation. 

This award was made possible by Arne and Steffi Siegel and honors Arnold W. Siegel, a longtime SAE member and Fellow whose extensive accomplishments in transportation safety and pioneering research include working with the world's first experimental full-scale automotive crash program, designing and constructing early versions of anthropometric dummies, and more than 40 years of collision and injury analysis and consulting for research and forensic purposes.

Criteria:

  • Nominees should be those in leadership positions who have made a significant safety impact related to transportation.
  • Accomplishments may include outstanding international research, innovation and practical application of technologies that support increased safety in transportation including but not limited to crash injury protection, crash injury biomechanics and crash injury design for all mobility vehicles: land, air, sea and space.

SAE International Award for Student Achievement and Technical Proficiency Honoring Phil and Jean Myers.

Purpose:

To recognize students who demonstrate outstanding technical expertise through the presentation of a technical paper or engineering project in association with a major SAE meeting, event or student competition.

The late Dr. Phil Myers and his wife Jean were lifelong devotees to students and SAE International. Myers was a renowned expert on internal combustion engines, and before his retirement, a professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Together with his wife, they set a high standard for excellence, concern for students, and involvement with SAE. In their honor, an award was established in 1997, to annually recognize the best technical writing by a student.

Criteria:

The writings must be based on work done by the author(s) while an undergraduate or graduate student and presented at a major SAE event.

Eligibility:

Members of the Selection Committee are not eligible for this award while serving on the committee. Two years must pass before former members of the Selection Committee are eligible to receive the award.

Recognition:

This includes an award and honorarium to the lead student author and is presented at an SAE event.

SAE International Award for Student Technical Innovation in Mobility Honoring Henry O. Fuchs

Purpose:

This award recognizes students (individuals or teams) who have developed technological innovations in the mobility industry in their research or schoolwork.

This award honors the memory of Professor Henry O. Fuchs. Professor Fuchs participated in the SAE Fatigue Design & Evaluation Committee's research projects and founded the SAE Fatigue Concepts in Design short course.

Criteria:

Nominees must be students at the time of nomination and have demonstrated new and unique innovations or concepts that benefit the mobility industry which can include, but are not limited to, fatigue technology.

SAE International Award for Teaching Excellence Honoring Gary Dickinson

Purpose:

This award honors an outstanding middle school teacher or a team of teachers who have made creative and exemplary use of the A World In Motion® (AWIM ®) program to develop students' understanding of math, science, and engineering.

This award was established through a generous gift from the SAE Detroit Section in 2001 to commemorate the life of industry leader, long-time GM executive Gary Dickinson, an advocate for providing math and science education to middle school students. Dickinson played a major role in the development of the AWIM program Motorized Toy Car and Glider Challenges.

Criteria:

  • Demonstrated, through qualitative and quantitative data, exemplary use of the AWIM curriculum.  
  • To be eligible for this award, nominees must be middle school teachers (individuals or teams) from public, parochial, or private schools.

SAE International Award for Technical and Leadership Excellence Honoring Rodica Baranescu

Purpose:

This award celebrates the successes of women in the engineering profession and recognizes their leadership and technical contributions in the aerospace, automotive and commercial vehicle sectors.

It serves to broaden the awareness of the reach and impact of women working in mobility engineering, and opening doors for young girls interested in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) who wish to pursue engineering careers.

Rodica Baranescu, Ph.D. made a generous gift in 2011 to establish this award. Dr. Baranescu is Past President of SAE International, an SAE Fellow and a member of the National Academy of Engineering.  As a mechanical engineer, she began her professional and academic career in her native country, Romania, before immigrating to the United States in 1980 and was later the first woman elected President of SAE International in 2000.

Criteria:

  • Nominees for this award must be women who have demonstrated technical competency and leadership in engineering.  
  • Three women will be honored each year - one from each mobility engineering sector (aerospace, automotive and commercial vehicle).
  • Awardees may be employed or retired, and they must be members of SAE International.

SAE International Award for an Influential Aerospace Executive Honoring the Wright Brothers

Purpose:

This award recognizes individuals for their executive leadership in Aerospace Engineering. Nominees may be executives who have served the aerospace industry for a large portion of their career and can demonstrate significant contributions to the progress and development of air transportation, creating value for their company, aerospace industry, and/or society.

Providing supervisory or managerial engineering direction alone does not fulfill the award requirement.

This award honors Orville (an early SAE member) and Wilbur Wright, the first successful builders and operators of heavier-than-air flying equipment.

Criteria:

  • Vice President or C-suite Executive for a minimum of five years.
  • Led at least two major corporate or industry initiatives.
  • Demonstrated success developing collaborative teams.
  • Exhibited a customer-focused environment.

Purpose:

This award recognizes individuals for their executive leadership in the off-highway industry. Nominees may be executives who have served the off-highway industry for a large portion of their career and can demonstrate significant contributions to the progress and development of this industry, creating value for their company, the industry and/or society.

Providing supervisory or managerial engineering direction alone does not fulfill the award requirement

This award honors Sid A. Olsen, his contributions to the off-highway industry, and the outstanding engineering management values he personified. Olsen, an SAE Fellow, was Manager of Engine Engineering at John Deere Product Engineering Center. Olsen was an industry leader who actively supported and participated in leading industry activities.

Criteria:

  • Vice President or C-suite executive for a minimum of five years.
  • Led at least two major corporate or industry initiatives.
  • Demonstrated success developing collaborative teams.
  • Fostered a customer-focused environment.

SAE International Cooperative Engineering Medal Honoring Arch T. Colwell

Purpose:

This Award recognizes an individual for their unique and outstanding contributions over a period of time to the work of the technical committees under the SAE Executive Standards Committee (ESC) in developing standards, specifications, technical reports, and data development through cooperative research.

The medal was named in honor of Arch T. Colwell, its first recipient and 1941 SAE President. Dr. Colwell symbolized the dedication and devotion of SAE members who work to further the objectives of SAE’s technical standards.

Criteria:

  • Significant contribution in terms of the originality of the individual's work.
  • Impact and influence of the individual's work on the progress and development of mobility engineering.
  • General value of the individual's contribution to industry, the profession, the public-at-large, and government.
  • Recognition by the individual's peers of both leadership and participation in achieving the full value of the technical standards program.
  • A listing of citations, papers authored, technical achievements, contributions to the ESC, its councils or divisions and committees, affiliations outside SAE relating to standards, etc.

Eligibility:

  • To be considered, nominations are obtained through the James M. Crawford Award.
  • Only living nominees will be considered.

SAE International Distinguished Speaker Award Honoring Lloyd L. Withrow

Purpose:

This Award recognizes those individuals who have demonstrated outstanding presentation skills. The award's intent is to maintain high presentations at SAE technical sessions by recognizing individuals who make outstanding presentations at those sessions.

Withrow was an SAE Fellow and noted speaker at many SAE meetings and recognized for his outstanding communication skills, and his continual insistence that those he supervised also develop and demonstrate excellent communications skills, both written and oral.

Criteria:

Recipients are selected from the top 5% of presenters based on audience votes during the live presentation at WCX.

Recognition:

SAE International ESC Outstanding Achievement Award Honoring James M. Crawford

Purpose:

This award recognizes those who make a valuable contribution of time and leadership in support of the SAE standards and technical committees through research, test methods and procedures, development of standards and/or external representation of the Society for similar works.

The SAE International ESC Outstanding Achievement Award was established to honor the 1945 SAE International President James M. Crawford.

Criteria:

  • Extraordinary leadership in the activities of a committee.
  • Outstanding contributions in the form of research, test methods and procedures.
  • Advancing SAE image as the premier international standards developer.
  • Exceptional effort related to document production.
  • Outstanding commitment to technical committee(s).

Eligibility:

  • The top awardee will receive the SAE International Cooperative Engineering Medal honoring Arch T. Colwell.
  • Members of the Selection Committee are not eligible for the award while serving on the committee. Two years must pass before former members of the Selection Committee are eligible to receive the award.

Recognition:

SAE International Educational Award Honoring Ralph R. Teetor

Purpose:

This award stimulates contacts between young engineering educators and practicing engineers in industry and government.

Reflecting the firm belief of its donor that engineering educators are the most effective link between engineering students and their future careers, the focus is on engineering educators early in their careers. Its objective is to provide an engaging atmosphere in which these teachers can meet and exchange views with practicing engineers.

Criteria:

  • Contributions to teaching and curriculum development.
  • Contributions to research, including grants, independent research and professional development.
  • Publications related to SAE mobility interests.
  • Applicant's education, leadership in student activities, and participation in engineering society activities.
  • Applicant's three support letters.
  • Benefits anticipated from participation in the Teetor program.

Eligibility:

  • Be an early career engineering educator with more than three, but less than 10 years of full-time faculty experience, immediately following completion of the terminal degree, M.S. or PhD, at the date of application.
  • Be affiliated with an engineering school accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) or a school from which SAE accepts student members.
  • Members of the Selection Committee are not eligible for this award while serving on the committee. Two years must pass before former members of the Selection Committee are eligible to receive the award.

Recognition:

This includes a certificate, a trip to a major SAE meeting, two years of SAE membership, and is presented at an SAE event.

SAE International Forest McFarland Award

Purpose:

This award recognizes volunteers for their outstanding contributions in the planning, development, and dissemination of technical information for SAE engineering events, meetings or professional development programs.

Established in 1979, this award honors Forest R. McFarland who was an outstanding session organizer and very active with various leadership roles on SAE committees.

Criteria:

Contributions may include support or organization of technical meetings, conferences, and professional development programs at SAE events or outstanding facilitation of the exchange of technical information.  

Eligibility:

Individuals - Three years must pass before an individual prior awardee is eligible for another McFarland.

Members of the Selection Committee - Committee Members are not eligible for the award while serving on the committee, and two years must pass before former members are eligible to receive a McFarland. Three-year limit on minimum number of years between successive awards for an individual

Recognition: 

This includes a certificate and invitation to a volunteer recognition event.

SAE International Formula SAE ® Grant Honoring Bill Adam

Purpose:

This award provides funding to a Formula SAE® (FSAE) team to assist with the development of their vehicle design.

Established in 2004, this award honors William R. "Bill" Adam's contribution to FSAE and his lifelong dedication to mentoring young engineers. Bill was a longtime SAE member and was an accomplished automotive industry engineer who helped develop the integrated Manifold-Muffler-Catalyst design.

Criteria:

  • Teams who are currently registered for a Formula SAE competition may apply.
  • Funds may only be used for costs associated with vehicle design in preparation for a Formula competition.
  • Special consideration will be given to those teams who were unable to secure major sponsors for their team.

Eligibility:

Members of the Selection Committee are not eligible for the award while serving on the committee. Two years must pass before former members of the Selection Committee are eligible to receive the award.

Recognition:

This includes an honorarium to be used toward the development of the vehicle.

SAE International Garrett Powertrain Innovation Award

Purpose:

This award recognizes undergraduate or graduate students who demonstrate exceptional technical expertise through their participation in SAE’s university programs.

Students receive this award based on exceeding expected results in technological areas such as, but not limited to, efficiency or powertrain performance during their SAE university program competition.

This award was made possible by a generous gift from Garrett and honors Cliff Garrett, a distinguished authority in turbomachinery engineering who inspired countless engineers through his example, support and many contributions as an aerospace pioneer.

Criteria:

Because this award is based on performance in an SAE university program, nominations are not accepted.

SAE International Humanitarian Award Honoring Arnold W. Siegel

Purpose:

This award recognizes individuals, teams, or entities whose mobility industry contributions – research, policy or practical application - have made a significant, positive, multi-generational impact on the world such as, but not limited to mobility safety or the environment, creating a safer, healthier world.

This award was made possible by Arne and Steffi Siegel and honors Arnold W. Siegel, a longtime SAE member and Fellow whose extensive accomplishments in transportation safety and pioneering research include working with the world's first experimental full-scale automotive crash program, designing and constructing early versions of anthropometric dummies, and more than 40 years of collision and injury analysis and consulting for research and forensic purposes.

Criteria:

  • Significant impact of the cited contribution(s) and the lasting social benefit to humanity.
  • Demonstrated notable achievements, outstanding national research, innovation within the mobility industry.
  • The cited contribution(s) may be measured by a combination of publications (technical articles, research papers, etc.), patents, honors, and awards.

Purpose:

Created in 1986, the SAE Medal of Honor annually recognizes an individual who has demonstrated unwavering loyalty to SAE International’s mission of advancing mobility solutions for the benefit of humanity.

Criteria:

  • Those who have made significant and sustaining contributions throughout the course of their career to SAE which have contributed to SAE’s global success.

  • Contributed to the SAE Community at Large through involvement as a member volunteer.

  • Served as an industry partner and ambassador for SAE’s vision, mission, and values.

  • Implemented, collaborated on, or developed mobility solutions on behalf of SAE for a better tomorrow.

  • Created societal impact through their work on behalf of SAE.

  • Two letters of recommendation are required. 

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Living, voting member of SAE International, who has not previously received the Award.

  • Unique, significant contributions.

Non-Eligible Categories:

•    SAE International Board Members are ineligible during the time of elected office.
•    Contributions occurring during the time the individual was employed by SAE as a staff member or consultant.

SAE International Mobility Innovation Award for People with Disabilities Honoring Steven M. Atkins

Purpose:

This award recognizes the significant technical achievements brought about by innovation, leadership, and inspiration of employees with disabilities working in the mobility engineering industry.

The award was established through a generous contribution from Boeing in 2011.

Criteria:

  • The nominee must be an individual who has met the purpose of this award and who is disabled as defined by the latest amendment to the “Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990.”
  • Demonstrated success in at least one major technical achievement benefiting the nominee’s company, industry, or society.

Eligibility:

Members of the Selection Committee are not eligible for this award while serving on the committee. Two years must pass before former members of the Selection Committee are eligible to receive the award.

Recognition:

SAE International Sustainable Aviation Award Honoring Ramesh Agarwal

Purpose:

This award recognizes individuals or teams (SAE members or non-members) who have made an impact on sustainable aviation, whether working in industry, government, or academia.

The award was made possible through a generous contribution from the Agarwal Family, in honor of Ramesh Agarwal, the William Palm Professor of Engineering at Washington University in St. Louis. Professor Agarwal is a leader in sustainable aviation, computational fluid dynamics, and renewable & clean energy technologies, and is a Fellow and longtime member of SAE International.

Criteria:

  • Positive impact may occur through innovations related to sustainable aviation fuels, new aircraft designs and propulsion systems, contrails mitigation and air-traffic management, advanced materials, noise reduction, coating technologies resistant to wear and tear, air quality improvement, greener manufacturing processes, and topics related to circular economy, machine learning and artificial intelligence in the context of sustainable aviation.
  • Innovations related to creating significant sustainable technologies or practices within the aviation infrastructure are also welcome.

Other contributions that may be considered for this award include:

  • Measurable efforts to decrease Co2 emissions & decrease in greenhouse gas emissions.
  • Advancements in the development &/or use of Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF) or hydrogen as a fuel source.
  • Impactful efforts to the Eco-system. 
  • Improvements in infrastructure.
  • Global market-based measures for aviation emissions.
  • Advancements in electric or hybrid-electric propulsion, and other innovative propulsion technologies including powerplant-airframe integration approaches.
  • Technological Innovation as related to airplanes, airport infrastructure &/or airplane support equipment.

SAE International Timken-Howard Simpson Automotive Transmission and Driveline Innovation Award

Purpose:

This award recognizes an individual or a team from the automotive industry for outstanding contributions to automotive transmission and driveline technology.

Funded through a gift from the Timken Company in 2007, this award honors Howard Simpson, who invented a revolutionary planetary gear set which constituted the basis for the Ford C4 and C5 transmission produced or the famous Chrysler Torqueflite transmission and several General Motors transmission models.

Criteria:

  • The award acknowledges new ideas, concepts, innovations, or applications that will assist in improving this technology.
  • Nominees should have demonstrated significant achievements in improving automotive transmission and driveline technology.

SAE John Johnson Award for Outstanding Research in Diesel Engines

Established in 2008, this award recognizes outstanding accomplishments and leadership in the area of diesel engines. Two awards are given each year, one for Best Paper and the other, the Diesel Engine Research Medal, given to an individual for outstanding leadership in research and development in the field of diesel engines through a singular accomplishment or lifetime achievement.

The Best Paper award recognizes the authors of an original and outstanding technical paper presented at an SAE meeting on the subject of diesel engines in the on- or off-road industries. Preferably the paper will be published in an SAE Journal and must address research advancements in diesel engines regarding efficiency and low emissions achieved by innovative experimental and modeling research of the engine, fuel and/or after treatment systems. Oral presentation scores must also be above average. If the lead author of the paper is a student, the material forming the subject matter must be based on personal work or a result of their thesis research. The best paper award is selected by the award committee.

The Diesel Engine Research Medal recognizes an outstanding leader whose professional career has focused on advancing the field of diesel engines. The award recognizes technical innovations through experimental studies and modeling research of the engine, fuel and/or after treatment systems. In addition, the nominee's contribution to SAE literature, activities and programs will also be considered. To nominate an individual, complete the nomination form above by the indicated nomination deadline. Any additional letters of support can be sent to awards@sae.org.

This award is funded through generous contributions from Dr. John H. Johnson, his colleagues and former students. Dr. Johnson is a Presidential Professor Emeritus with the Department of Mechanical Engineering-Engineering Mechanics at Michigan Technological University (MTU) and he is a fellow of SAE International and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. He is an expert in the field of diesel engines and his experience spans a wide range of analysis and experimental work related to advanced engine concepts, emissions studies, fuel systems, engine simulation and exhaust aftertreatment. Prior to joining MTU, he was a Project Engineer at the U.S. Army Tank Automotive Center and Chief Engineer of Applied Engine Research at International Harvester Company.

The Best Paper award consists of a framed certificate and a $2000 honorarium for the lead author of the technical paper and framed certificates for co-authors. The individual awardee of the Diesel Engine Research Medal receives a framed certificate, a medal and a $2,000 honorarium. The awards are presented at the WCX World Congress Experience or other appropriate SAE meeting.

SAE John Melvin Motorsport Safety Award

Established in 2016, this award honors individuals, organizations or teams (both SAE members and nonmembers) whose research and/or practical application represents unique, original concepts that, when applied to motorsports, cause significant positive change and elevate safety to new levels of innovation, in the memory of Dr. John Melvin. Dr. Melvin was a pioneer in the field of driver safety, particularly in the area of driver restraint systems. He persuaded drivers to adopt the HANS (head and neck restraint) device, and was a key developer of "black box" data recording for racecars that helped sanctioning bodies learn from accidents. His contributions as a safety consultant to NASCAR for more than 13 years will leave a lasting mark on the sport. Nominees should be those persons who have demonstrated a commitment to reducing the injuries in auto racing incidents. This award is funded by the generous support of NASCAR and will consist of a wall plaque and a $1000 Honorarium.

SAE Ralph K. Hillquist NVH Lifetime Achievement Award

Established, in 2012, this award recognizes those individuals who have shown a continued contribution to Ground Vehicle Noise, Vibration and Harshness (NVH) over a period of 15 years or more. Examples of significant contributions would include participating as an organizer in the SAE Noise & Vibration Conference, mentoring younger NVH professionals, a history of ground vehicle NVH publications of note, teaching seminars and other classes related to this topic, and leadership in SAE, commercial organizations, or elsewhere where vehicle NVH is a primary topic of concern.

The award is intended to recognize not only the professional, but also the personal qualities of the individual. He or she should be someone who is supportive of others in the profession and who has played a key role in the development of others in the field. It honors Ralph Hillquist, the founder of the Noise & Vibration Conference and recognize his achievements and contributions to the NVH community, to recognize individuals who, like Hillquist, have an outstanding record of contributions to the field of NVH, and to enhance the image of the field.

SAE Sid Olsen Engineering Executive of the Year Award

Established, in 1995, this award recognizes an outstanding engineering executive in the off-highway industry. Candidates are nominated by their employees, colleagues, supervisors or the local SAE Section, with the nomination supported by another individual from the same group. The nomination and the supporting document should clearly state information to judge the individual's capabilities against the qualifications listed below.

The nominee will be judged primarily on the basis of the following qualifications:

  • Field proven products and/or services
  • Successful protégés
  • Outstanding teams developed
  • Unquestioned integrity
  • Charismatic leadership
  • Creation of a supportive environment allowing a customer/product focus.

This award honors Sid A. Olsen, his contributions to the off-highway industry, and the outstanding engineering management values he personified. Olsen, an SAE Fellow, was Manager of Engine Engineering at John Deere Product Engineering Center. He was a charismatic leader who was successful in attracting top engineering talent and in developing their capabilities further. His protégés have been very successful throughout the off-highway industry. Olsen was an industry leader who actively supported and participated in leading industry activities.

The award consists of a plaque bearing Mr. Olsen's profile and a $1000 scholarship donation to the university of the recipient's choice. It is presented at the SAE Commercial Vehicle Engineering Congress & Exhibition.

SAE/AEM Outstanding Young Engineer Award

Established in 1996, this award recognizes an outstanding young engineer in the off-highway or powerplant industry. The nomination and the supporting document should clearly state information to judge the individual's capabilities against the qualifications listed below.

  • Degreed engineer from the off-highway or powerplant industry
  • Less than 10 years of industry experience
  • Innovation
  • Leadership
  • Teamwork

  • Community involvement
  • Leadership in SAE activities

SAE/AISI Sydney H. Melbourne Award for Excellence in the Advancement of Automotive Sheet Steel

Established in 1997, this award recognizes an author, who, in his/her paper, effectively demonstrates ways to further the use of sheet steel in automotive applications. The paper must be well organized, written in a succinct manner and possess excellent technical merit. It should also foster long-term benefits to sheet steel industry professionals worldwide.

The award honors the memory and accomplishments of the late Sydney H. Melbourne of Dofasco Inc., and encourages others to strive for the level of excellence he attained within his organization, the steel industry and the automotive marketplace.

The award is presented at the Awards Ceremony during the WCX World Congress Experience.

SAE/InterRegs Standards and Regulations Award

Established in 2000, this award recognizes a practicing engineer who has provided significant contributions to standards, regulations or conformity assessment systems for improved safety or reduced emissions in a ground vehicle mobility product. The individual can work on the standards/regulation language and/or on product to comply with the standards/regulation.

The award was established by InterRegs Ltd. as a way to reward significant participation in standards, regulations or conformity assessment systems by engineers and to encourage increased participation in the future.

The award is presented at the SAE Government/Industry Meeting or at an appropriate SAE International meeting.

SAE/Magnus Hendrickson Innovation Award

This award honors renowned inventor and businessman Magnus Hendrickson, who founded Hendrickson Motor Truck Company in 1913, by recognizing individuals or teams (SAE members or non-members) whose efforts in commercial vehicle dynamics represent true innovation and have created significant, lasting change in the commercial vehicle industry.

The ideal award recipient(s) is an individual or team (SAE member or non-member) whose research and/or practical application represents unique, original concepts that when applied to vehicle dynamics, cause significant, positive change and elevate vehicle dynamics to new levels of innovation.

For the purpose of this award the following applies:

  • “Commercial Vehicle” is defined as a Class 1 through 8 on-highway or on/off–highway truck, tractor-trailer, or bus whose primary purpose is to transport goods or people, and excludes any such vehicles intended solely for use in military, farming, or construction applications.
  • “Vehicle Dynamics” is defined as the ride, handling, stability, or load carrying ability of a truck, tractor-trailer, or bus, and excludes the aerodynamics of any such vehicles.
  • The award (i) shall be given for an actual component, subsystem, or system that is physically incorporated into a Commercial Vehicle and enhances Vehicle Dynamics, and (ii) shall exclude a study, procedure, or process that predicts or analyzes Vehicle Dynamics.

Nominees must have earned at least one U.S. Patent that represents an original concept or design and qualifies as a significant engineering achievement in vehicle dynamics for the commercial vehicle industry.     Further, any such components, subsystem, or systems need not be patented, but must have been offered for sale for at least one year.

Previous engineering achievements and innovation will be considered when determining nominees' eligibility for this award.

SAE/Timken-Howard Simpson Automotive Transmission and Driveline Innovation Award

Established in 2007, this award recognizes an individual or a team from the automotive industry for outstanding contributions to the technology progress and dissemination in the area of automotive transmission and driveline. The award acknowledges new ideas, concepts, innovations or applications that will assist in improving this technology.

This award has been funded through an endowment from the Timken Company to honor Howard Simpson, an extremely talented and innovative engineer who has invented and developed a revolutionary planetary gear set which constituted the basis for the Ford C4 and C5 transmission produced over more than 20 years starting in 1964, for the famous Chrysler Torqueflite transmission, a ground-breaking unit introduced in 1956 and for several General Motors transmission models. The award is also testimony to Timken's commitment to technical innovation and creativity.

Sperry Award

Purpose:

The Sperry Award is given in recognition of distinguished engineering contribution, which through application proven in actual service has advanced the art of transportation, whether by land, sea, air or space.

The Sperry Award is administered by a board representing six engineering organizations: the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, the American Society of Civil Engineers, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, SAE International, and the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers.

Criteria:

The preliminary application must address the following:

  • Specific person or persons to be honored.
  • Specific item created or improved and its nature (e.g., device).
  • Type of commercial transportation affected (e.g., land).
  • How the item “advanced the state of the art of transportation” (e.g., economics).
  • Why that enhancement is “distinguished”.
  • Specific engineering contribution made by the specific person.
  • Why that engineering contribution is “distinguished”.
  • How that engineering achievement has been “through application, proved in actual service” (e.g., when, where).

Steven M. Atkins Ability and Achievement in Science, Engineering, and Technology (AASET) Award

Established in 2011, the purpose/objective of this award is to recognize the significant technical achievements brought about by innovation, leadership and inspiration of employees with disabilities working in the aerospace engineering industry. It also demonstrates the deeper scope and reach of SAE International to mobility engineering professionals.

The Steven M. Atkins Ability and Achievement in Science, Engineering, and Technology (AASET) Award was established to recognize aerospace employees with disabilities who, through their technical achievements, innovation, leadership and inspiration, have contributed to the aerospace industry.

This award was enabled by a contribution from The Boeing Company to honor Steven M. Atkins, Vice President, Product Integrity and Functional Excellence, Boeing Commercial Airplanes.

The selected recipient would be an individual who has met the purpose/objective of this award and who is disabled as defined by the latest amendment to the "Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990."

The award is an engraved crystal/marble obelisk and a $200 honorarium.

Subir Chowdhury Medal of Quality Leadership

The purpose of this award is to bring an awareness of the beneficial impact provided to society at large that has been attained by mobility engineering through the use and power of quality in engineering. This serves to broaden the vision, scope and perception of SAE International as an organization, and highlights the contribution of individuals and their work in this area. The award also demonstrates the deeper scope and reach of SAE International and the mobility engineering professions to the public.

Dr. Subir Chowdhury is an SAE Fellow and a past recipient of the SAE Henry Ford II Distinguished Award for Excellence in Automotive Engineering. His works have provided many benefits and profoundly affected product/process and system design, time to market, cost reductions, quality improvements, manufacturing, and workforce knowledge in many U.S. industries and to Society at large.

The Subir Chowdhury Medal of Quality Leadership was established in 2010 to honor those in the mobility industry who bring forth innovation and broaden the impact of "quality" in mobility engineering, design and manufacture. This award recognizes Dr. Subir Chowdhury's contributions to the quality and engineering professions. The award consists of a framed certificate and a medallion.

This award is conferred upon a leader from academia or industry of recognized ability who has contributed their substantial skills and talent to accomplish the goal of advancing and promoting the principles and application of "quality" in Mobility Engineering professions.

Thomas H. Speller Award

Established in 1983, this award recognizes unusual achievements of an individual who, through dedicated service, tireless efforts, high ideals, and vision, contributed significantly to the implementation of manufacturing processes and methodologies in the dedicated discipline of automated fastening machines and their applications.

The award consists of a framed certificate and is presented each year at either the Aerospace Manufacturing and Automated Fastening Conference and Exhibition or the AeroTech Congress.

Trevor O. Jones Outstanding Paper Award

The former Convergence Transportation Electronics Association (CTEA) in June 1992 developed the Convergence Outstanding Paper Award (later renamed the Trevor O. Jones Outstanding Paper Award). An endowment established by Siemens Automotive, Ford Motor Company and ITT Automotive supports the award in perpetuity. This Award honors the author of written paper which covers aspects of passenger car, truck, and commercial vehicle electronics systems. This award recognizes Trevor O. Jones, Founder of Convergence®, for his contributions to the field of transportation electronics.

Vincent Bendix Automotive Electronics Engineering Award

Established in 1976, this award annually recognizes the author(s) of the best paper(s) relating to the subject matter of automotive electronics engineering. Material or development forming the subject matter of the paper must be based on personal work.

 

William Littlewood Memorial Lecture

Established in 1971, this award provides for an annual lecture dealing with a broad phase of civil air transportation considered of current interest and major importance. The objective is to advance air transport engineering and to recognize those who make personal contributions to the field.

The award perpetuates the memory of William Littlewood, the only person ever to be president of both SAE (1954) and the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics. He was renowned for his contributions to the design of, and operational requirements for, civil transport aircraft.

Wright Brothers Medal

Established in 1927, this award annually recognizes the author(s) of the best paper(s) relating to the invention, development, design, construction, or operation of an aircraft and/or spacecraft presented at a meeting of the Society or any of its sections. Consideration is given to the value of the author(s) contribution to the state of the art in furthering flight technology, whether it pertains to aircraft or spacecraft systems or their parts, components, subsystems, or accessories.

This award honors Orville (an early SAE member) and Wilbur Wright, the first successful builders and operators of heavier-than-air flying equipment.
